Boca Raton Intracoastal Fishing 7/14/10
This morning we took the BocaRaton Housing Authority summer camp fishing at the BocaRaton boat ramp as a reward for doing so well during the last 5 weeks in class. The kids were all so interested in learning about fishing, and always had fishing questions for me. This morning was their chance to show me and themselves everything they have learned. The kids all set up their rods, put some squid on the hook, and dropped their lines in the water. It didn't take long for the fish to start biting. The kids caught snappers, grunts, and a sand perch. There was even one student who fought an unknown fish for 10 minutes before losing it. I would like to thank everyone at the BocaRaton Housing Authority and the kids for an amazing morning of fishing.
The Florida Fishing Academy is a division of Teem REEL Estate Inc., a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2006. In our forth year, the academy aims to create a new generation of ethical anglers who enjoy a healthy, constructive hobby, take seriously their role in environmental conservation and boast new tools to pursue a potential career in the marine industries. The centerpiece of our program Angling For A Healthy Future is an updated version of the nationally acclaimed Hooked On Fishing-Not On Drugs ® (HOFNOD) curriculum, a 20-year-old program created by the Future Fisherman Foundation to introduce fishing to youth in a responsible, ethical manner that promotes environmental conservation. In 2009, we had 900 students complete our course Angling For A Healty Future and 763 children attend either a half-day fish camp or fair so far. We have awarded over 2,000 children with a free fishing rod and reel since 2006. In that time, we also have taken over 100 fishing trips and caught over 200 fish. We have successfully released alive 95% of all fish caught. We are available to teach our course in South Florida.
